I have written this post to explain why I will be voting for Reform UK on Thursday 4th July in the UK General Election. I appreciate that this will probably not be welcomed by some who know me but given the importance to our country please hear me out.
For the last few years the UK has gone backwards economically, socially, culturally and politically, a process which many are describing as “managed decline”. Whilst momentous changes are taking place across the globe, GDP per capita has been falling continuously, immigration both legal and illegal is out of control, young people cannot get on the housing ladder, our NHS is failing despite record funding and the main-stream parties are arguing about how soon to destroy what remains of our economy with NetZero.
The choice between the two main parties is no choice at all. Labour will be worse in terms of taxation, NetZero and woke ideology but the Tories have left us with the highest tax burden since WW2 and are champions of a slightly slower NetZero. They did little or nothing to fight back against “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion” and “Critical Race Theory” becoming embedded in all our public institutions.
But, regarding the economy, you say they had to contend with the pandemic and the war in Ukraine? Yes they did, but it was unnecessary to impose further lockdowns after the initial panic as many eminent scientists said at the time. The impact on children was particularly egregious. At no point was there any cost benefit analysis of lockdown policy.
The war in Ukraine was predictable though not justified. The EU and NATO push towards the Russian border was seen as a threat by Putin but, I’ll say it again, that is not an excuse, it is geopolitics - think Cuban missile crisis. Inevitably, the longer the war goes on the more Ukrainians will die. Boris Johnson is said to have killed off peace talks early in the conflict - like Blair before him he has much blood on his hands. The increase in our energy costs was an acceleration of already rising prices and the response to Russia was ham-strung because nations like Germany are dependent upon Russian gas, a fallout from their disastrous decision to close their nuclear power plants.
Will things get worse under a Labour government? Undoubtedly. Not least because with a weak leader like Starmer, it won’t be long before the more extreme voices on the left urge for radical changes. This will likely include support for a blasphemy law to attack those of us worried about the rise of radical Islam. A Labour government will not be good news for Jews in our country, whatever Starmer says about how he has reformed the party. Extending the franchise to sixteen year olds, is a cynical move. It is also looking pretty stupid as polls show more and more young people moving to the right because they see no future the way our country is going.
I would rather opt for a shorter period of pain as people finally realise that the two-party system will never work. Look at the US where a president who struggles to string a sentence together has been propped up by factions in the Democratic Party and mainstream media who are now acting shocked that he did so badly in the debate! Two party politics just does not work when nations are led by a political class on both sides that is only interested in power and self-advancement. The days of statesmen and women with strong principles are long gone, well almost.
So why do I think Reform UK is worth supporting, despite all its flaws as a fledgling insurgent party?
Firstly, like him or loath him, agree with or not, Nigel Farage is a leader with principles, a clear vision and charisma. You may not like what he stands for and that is OK. Don’t vote for him in that case, but please make sure that you understand the man rather than the absurd caricature painted by the likes of the BBC and others in the mainstream media. He is confident and is not afraid to voice opinions that are unpopular with some because he truly believes in them.
Secondly, Reform UK is the only party offering costed common sense policies on tax, immigration, NetZero and healthcare for a start. For an example, Reform is absolutely focussed on supporting smaller businesses with abolition of the IR35 tax rule for the self-employed and overall want to grow the economy through this support. Thirdly, Reform UK offers a positive optimistic vision for our country, saying we should be proud of our culture, history and values. At the recent NEC Rally in Birmingham, we were treated to a fantastic speech by the latest major donor to Reform UK, a tech entrepreneur called Zia Yusuf. His speech was inspirational, more so because it was given from the standpoint of an immigrant family. If you take nothing else from this post, please do watch his speech:
Winston Marshall carried out a Vox Pop at the rally to find out whether the caricature of Reform voters is valid in real life. As well as finding many younger people supporting Reform, everyone provided intelligent and practical arguments for supporting Reform.
Like all these people I don’t believe this is a protest vote. Something is starting to happen here, which picks up on the zeitgeist of what is happening in Europe and across the world. Rearranging the deckchairs won’t fix the underlying structural issues in our country. Don’t believe me? Matt Goodwin is the best pollster and analyst out there and he has been capturing the mood and predicting events for the last couple of years. His Substack is very popular and he has a great YouTube channel. This video captures exactly why people like me are embracing Reform UK policies:
A friend recently asked me to reconsider and vote for the Conservative Party but I explained this would be like an abusive partner asking for forgiveness for the umpteenth time pleading “I promise, this time I won’t do it again!” No, I just don’t believe it. And I vowed I would never vote for Labour again since Tony Blair led us into the war with Iraq.
It’s all too understandable why so many people have become so cynical, to believe that things will never change. If Matt Goodwin is right, then something major is going on and change is coming. Rather than a slow decline, which will inevitably be difficult to recover from, we need drastic decisive action to halt and turn this round before it is too late.
So there is it. If you got this far, whether you agree with me or not, I can only thank you.
If you can’t bring yourself to vote for Reform UK please consider the next best option which is the SDP or failing them, any of the increasingly strong independent candidates in your area.
